Garn Farmhouse
Farmhouse. Early C19. Coursed and squared limestone; rendered at back and sides, probably intended to be rendered and lined as ashlar to front as well; low-pitched slate roof, hipped to left. 2 storeys. Deep eaves; large external-end stack to right, integral brick end stack at left, and external lateral brick stack at rear. 3 bays; 16-pane glazing bar sashes with stone flat arches (possibly some refenestration - see straight joints to right, or possibly reuse of earlier structure); 3 semi-circular steps to central 6 flush panelled door with 3-part rectangular overlight, panelled reveals and soffit, and pilastered surround with moulded cornice and open triangular pediment. Probably mid to late C19 one storey hipped addition to left with chamfered corner.
Farmbuildings
Barns and cowhouses. Mid-C17 and late C18. L-plan range; timber framed barn with red brick nogging; coursed rubble plinth and slate roof; late C18 coursed limestone rubble barn and cowhouses with corrugated asbestos and slate roofs. Framing: square panels, 3 up to wall plate. South-east range; South-west front: C17 barn to right, stone-faced to left; 3 boarded loft doors, central boarded door; late C18 barn to left with weatherboarded gable-end. North-east front: 2 pairs of boarded doors to left and corrugated iron lean-to to right. North-west range: pair of large barn doors to left, matched at rear; 2 pairs of boarded doors to right flanking large boarded panel (possibly place of former barn doors) and vertical vents; 2 boarded loft doors to right
Newcastle Hall
Farmhouse. Probably late C18 with late C19 addition at rear. Coursed and roughly squared limestone rubble; hipped slate roof. L-plan. 2 storeys. Large brick end-stack to right and 2 brick stacks to rear. 5 bays, blank first floor central bay; 16-pane glazing bar sashes with exposed boxes and stone flat arches; central 6-panelled door (lower panels flush) and probably C20 gabled stone porch with glazed door
Newcastle Mill
Watermill. Late C18 and mid-Cl9. Roughly squared and coursed limestone rubble; slate roof. 2 storeys and gable-lit attic with 2-storey C19 addition to South-west (see straight joint in masonry). Integral brick stack in right-hand corner. South-east front: 2-leaf boarded ground floor door to right with boarded hoist-door above and small window to left; C19 addition to left with small first floor casement to left, ground floor boarded door to left and large boarded segmental-headed opening to right (probably formerly to accommodate, or for access to, the wheel).
The Mill
Cottage. Probably early C18 with late C19 remodelling. Partly painted coursed limestone rubble, rendered at rear; slate roof. One storey and attic. Three C19 gabled semi-dormers with 4-pane sashes; integral stone end stack. 2-window front; C20 two-light casements; central half-glazed door and C20 gabled glazed porch with boarded door. Lean-to to left with stone slate roof. Interior: timber framed cross walls. Cl9 or C20 addition to front at left is not of special interest. This building was possibly formerly thatched.
Wellfield
House and outbuildings. Circa 1840. Limestone ashlar with slate roof in 2 parallel ranges. 2 storeys. Deep eaves; integral stone end stacks. 3 bays, 16-pane glazing bar sashes with stone flat arches; central 6-panelled door with Greek Doric porch, consisting of coupled columns supporting frieze, cornice and blocking course. Outbuildings to North-west; coursed limestone rubble, timber framed first floors with painted brick nogging and slate roof. L-plan with stables, coach house and loft.
Bryndrinog Farmhouse
A Clun Valley isolated farm, not cased in stone as the majority now are. Positioned on a stretch of Offa's Dyke and opposite Lower Spoad. Brooks runs in front of house. Ground rises at rear. C1600 and not modernised. Hall and crosswing. 2 bay hall. 2 storey, lobby entry. Stairs to right of doorway. 2 Bay wing. Seems contemporary with hall. Purlins in wing are joined by resting on top of each other. Weren-hir stops in wing&hall. Hall ceiling is lower than ceiling in wing.<3>Farmhouse. Early-to-mid C17. Timber framed on rubble plinth with wattle and daub infill panels and asbestos slate roof. Baffle entry plan of 2 framed bays with flush gabled cross wing to left. One storey and attic. Central brick ridge stack and raking eaves-dormer to right with 4-light casement. 2 and 3-light mid to late C19 casements, that on ground floor to left with transom and small panels. Boarded door beneath stack to right of gable. Square panel framing, 3 up to wall plate; truss in front gable with 4 struts to collar and V-struts in apex. Lean-tos on each side. Lower mid-Cl9 wing set back to left with rendered frame, coursed rubble end wall, slate roof and stack to rear. Cross wing projects to rear in stone, catslide lean-to beyond. Very picturesque setting by the River Clun.
